Harley-Davidson VIN structure
Harley VINs start with 1HD for US-built bikes and 5HD for US-built export models; overseas assembly uses local WMIs such as 932 (Brazil). Harley used 9-digit serial numbers into the early 1980s, and the VIN only became 17 digits for the 1981 model year.

| MEG | Harley-Davidson India (assembly) |
Major assembly plants
| Plant | Models built |
|---|---|
| Milwaukee, WI (USA) | Powertrains |

Model year — the 10th character
10th digit = model year. The 30-year code cycle bites hard on Harleys: the same letter means 1980s OR 2010s — match the letter against the bike's visible generation, not just the table. See the full VIN year chart.
Options and packages
Harley option and paint codes are not in the VIN. Factory data for US bikes is available from Harley dealers by VIN; older bikes are documented by the serial number in the H-D registry.

Known decode traps
- Bikes with no title: the Vermont registration route (register-by-mail without title, then transfer) is the community-standard workaround — verify current state rules first.
- Engine swaps are common on Harleys; the VIN on the frame is the legal one, engine numbers are separate.
- Harley VINs pre-1981 (9-digit) cannot be decoded by any 17-digit tool.
Recalls and this brand
Harley recall coverage via NHTSA is good for 1981+ bikes; earlier machines predate the database.
