BMW VIN structure
Every BMW VIN starts with a WMI that tells you where the car was built: WBA for BMW AG Germany, WBS for BMW M GmbH, WBY for BMW i models, and 4US for BMW US Manufacturing in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Model year — the 10th character
The 10th character is the model year code (K = 2019, L = 2020, M = 2021, N = 2022, P = 2023, R = 2024, S = 2025). US-market cars are stamped by model year, which can differ from the calendar year of production by up to a year. See the full VIN year chart.
Options and packages
Standard decoders stop at trim level. BMW option codes (the SA codes, e.g. 2VF Adaptive M Suspension) live in the build sheet, not in the VIN itself — the VIN only identifies the base vehicle. Your SA code sticker is under the hood or in the service book, and the full option list is on the build sheet.

Known decode traps
- NHTSA field notes occasionally mislabel horsepower figures on M cars — cross-check M badging before trusting a spec sheet.
- A decoder that reports an Alpina based only on VIN is unreliable; Alpina conversions were often registered as regular BMWs.
- Pre-1981 BMWs use shorter VINs that 17-digit tools cannot process — see the 13-digit guide.
Recalls and this brand
BMW recall lookups are brand-covered via NHTSA; emissions-related campaigns are an EPA matter and will NOT appear in any VIN recall lookup (read the Toyota page for why that matters).
